The Brief but Sweet History of Halloween Candy

boyerhalloweencandy

Halloween and candy goes together like spaghetti and meatballs, but how exactly did this pairing come about? Did you know that it’s estimated that Americans will spend a whipping $2 billion dollars on candy during Halloween? Believe it or not, the Halloween we know and love today didn’t really come about until the 1930s. Before the 30s, Halloween was mostly treated as a night to go out and cause mischief, and not necessarily gather any types of treats. It wasn’t until the 1950s that candy companies banded together to try and come up with the perfect candy holiday, and their eyes went straight to Halloween.

It was during this time that candy companies decide to try and dominate the Halloween holiday and make it the biggest candy holiday of the year. Of course candy was a big part of Christmas and Easter, but before this, there wasn’t any type of sweet treat associated with Halloween. Can you even imagine trick-or-treating without receiving a delicious Mallo Cup? We can’t either. It wasn’t until the 1970s that candy became synonymous with Halloween, which was only a little more than 40 years ago.  From everyone at Boyer Candy Company, we hope you have a safe and spooktacular Halloween!
